Kihikihi may have been just the second start for the autumn for Greensleeves but you wouldn’t know it.
With his rider and owner Megan Finlayson, the 12-year-old was a comfortable winner of the Horselands CIC1* class, heading home 36 other combinations to take the honours.
The Northland combination led from the get-go, and finished on their 40.2 penalty point dressage score.
The win was particularly special for Finlayson as the horse contracted a virus in the spring, which knocked him around a bit.
“I was hoping for a win but with him not being well in the spring I just wanted to get him going good and happy.”
He placed third in the 2* class last year but she dropped him back because of the illness.
As a level five dressage horse, she knew he could produce a good test.
“He jumped well in the cross country too. By the time we got out there it was quite deep around the fences but John Nicholson tracks are always phenomenal,” said Finlayson.
The round wasn’t all plain sailing though.
“Coming out of the first water he lost his footing and stumbled, but we recovered well and go to the next element. That time was tight out there and we had to gallop.”
Showjumping is never a problem for Greensleeves.
“It was a big field and there were a lot of quality horses in the fields. Everyone loves coming here (to Kihikihi). I am so relieved we had an event – it would have been a real shame to have another top event cancelled because of the weather.”
The horse is from well recognised sport horse Abalou lines. Finlayson has had him “forever”.
“I got him as a weanling from Lou and Wilma Thompson. He is my boy and I do love him. He’s a good horse to have on the truck and looks out for the younger ones.”
Finlayson is hopeful the horse will be back at 2* level next year.
