Anna Mesman admitted it was both daunting and scary being on debut at Kihikihi, but she needn’t have worried as today she and Chester FW rode off with the honours in the Vosper CNC105 Open A.
The Silverdale combination were second after the dressage, just a smidgen behind leader Nick Stackpole (Manukau) on Delta Duet. However, a stunning cross country moved them into the lead, and they held on in the showjumping to take the win.
“It is a bit daunting and scary coming to Kihikihi but it is the one you really want to do well in,” says Mesman.
She has had the 17 HH horse for two-and-a-half years. The stationbred shire cross was showjumping to 1.2m with Trudi Mitchell. It is their first full season at pre-novice after illness halted their efforts previously.
“This is our busiest season yet,” said Mesman, who has been eventing “forever”. “We had to withdraw from Kihikihi last year so I am just stoked to be here.”
The combination have taken a little while to get their partnership working.
“I know he has all the ability but it was just figuring things out and getting him to be brave. He wants to please all the time.”
Coming into the showjumping there was just over two points in it.
“I was very nervous in the showjumping . . . I knew he could do it but it was down to me.”
Mesman is trained by Kirsten Kelly, Tors Rattray and Tina Thorowgood.
“This is so special to win – it is his first three day and my first completed three day, so lots of firsts for us today. It is just so cool to win.”
