Super Star Makes Appearance at Kihikihi

Semi retirement seems to be suiting Quimbo just fine.
With his previous rider, former number one Andrew Nicholson, Quimbo claimed a number of top awards including victory at the 2013 Rolex Kentucky CCI4, in 2012at the CCIO3* Boekelo, the CIC3* at Blenheim in 2012, the CIC3* at Burnham Market in 2011 and a number of others.
But now, a far more sedate way of life beckons.
The 13-year-old Spanish bred gelding has come ‘home’ to New Zealand, to be ridden by Charlie Sellar – daughter of Quimbo’s owner Libby Sellar – and her children Oscar and Molly.
It was fitting that he made an appearance at the final day of the 2016 Kihikihi International Horse Trial, as the relationship between the Nicholsons and Sellars goes back to the early 1990s.
Quimbo was ridden today by Emilie Forsyth, who has been keeping the horse in work, Charlie and nine-year-old Oscar.
Charlie, a keen polo player, is reacquainting herself with dressage and showjumping skills and says it is likely she will do some low level eventing on her new schoolmaster in the future.
“He is such a kind and adaptable horse,” said Charlie. “I last evented about 20 years ago so there is a bit to re-learn!”
She still can’t believe her luck in getting Quimbo to New Zealand.
“Years ago I said to Andrew if he ever decided to retire him to pick me . . . well he did!”
