Drive Home Not So Far for Winner

Katharine Van Tuyl has always dreamt of winning the Waipa Home of Champions CIC3* at the Kihikihi International Horse Trial, but all her horses end up getting sold.
That all changed this year when she headed home the field to take a convincing win by nearly 10 penalty points over Dannie Lodder (Auckland) and Tomahawk II.
Van Tuyl (Palmerston North) reaped the rewards of jumping Double J Sunshine to grand prix level this season, with a lovely clear over the Gerrit Beker-designed course, albeit with two time faults.
“I thought I would have time,” said a very happy rider. “I was getting jumped out of the saddle out there, he was just jumping bigger and bigger!”
Her worries that the eight-year-old had felt a little tired in the warm-up quickly evaporated as they entered the ring.
It has been 10 years since Van Tuyl last competed at Kihikihi.
“I have always wanted to win this class but everything gets sold,” said the 36-year-old. “Not this one though! I have had some really cool horses, but this is one of the bet I think. He just has so much scope . . . he has a different technique but he tries so hard.”
She will now head to Taupo for the three day, and is contemplating a dressage show somewhere before hand. Adelaide is also a distinct possibility.
“It won’t be such a long drive home with a win like this,” said Van Tuyl. “It is just wonderful . . . this is certainly one of the most beautiful events of the season.”
Just seven of the original 12 combinations started the showjumping today.
The Gerrit Beker-designed course was built to size, at 1.25m high and the biggest spread at 1.71m.
A cheeky upright on a corner proved problematic for many, and Van Tuyl was the only rider to have no jumping faults.
