Pico Boo Back in Style

Samantha Felton’s “big journey” with Ricker Ridge Pico Boo had a happy ending in the AON Insurance CIC2* at the Kihikihi International Horse Trial today.
“A lot of blood, sweat and tears has gone into this horse so it is lovely for it all to come together and have the horse we love back in form.”
The form she speaks of was victory in the 2*. She took the lead in the cross country after coming home a whopping 37 seconds inside time, and despite a rail today in the showjumping, held on for the win, finishing on 55.3 penalty points, with Kimberley Rear (Hamilton) on Delta Legacy second and Megan Finlayson (Kerikeri) on Greensleeves third.
Sarah Young (Tokoroa) who was second at the end of the cross country aboard SS Galaxy, withdrew before the final phase, saying her horse just wasn’t 100%.
Felton has had just a handful of starts with 11-year-old Pico Boo after his year off with injury. It was compounded when the horse was injured during rehabilitation, but today he looked to be back to his usual self.
Felton will do another 2* with him this season and if she feels he is up to it, the 3* at Taupo.
“The plan was to do the 4* at Adelaide but the qualification rules have changed so it isn’t possible this year. However, Adelaide have just announced they will be running a 3* so maybe we will do that.”
Felton won a $20,000 emerging talent performance enhancement grant from High Performance Sport New Zealand, and plans to use it for the trans Tasman trip.
“I will possibly also to the 3* or 4* there too with Ricker Ridge Escada (who today finished sixth in the CIC3*).”
