Bittersweet Win for Lawrence in CIC1*

Abby Lawrence was lined up to do the presentations in the Prestige Equestrian CIC1* class at Kihikihi today . . . but that all changed when she and Charlton Yamani won.
The Te Puke combination – who are sponsored by Prestige – were second after the dressage, took the lead in the cross country and held on to win today thanks to a healthy buffer over those behind them on the leaderboard.
It was a bittersweet victory for 26-year-old Lawrence, who made the tough decision to retire her 2015 CIC3* winner Pseudonym just before the event.
“It has certainly been a bit of a week,” said Lawrence. “I didn’t even watch the 3*. This is an event I have always loved and at the end of the day, it is the sport. I know in my heart I have done the right thing by him. I just had to get on with it really.”
And that is just what she did with the eight-year-old Yamani, who finished on 48.7 penalty.
The victory completed a unique set for Lawrence, who has now won the pre-novice (2012 o Indy RE), the 2* (2011 on Pseudonym) and the 3* (2015 on Pseudonym).
“I do love this event,” she said. “To me, it didn’t matter if I won, we were here for a confidence round and to win is just the icing on the cake.”
Jessica Woods (Ohaupo) and LV Balou Jeanz, who had been leading after the dressage phase, held on to their runner-up spot after a clear in the showjumping, adding two time faults to their tally to finish on 50.1 penalty points.
A clear round, inside time, saw Samantha Felton (Matangi) and Ricker Ridge Mystery Man move from fourth to third.
