Rebuild Going Well for Smith
Nothing is going to stop 2014 1* champ Donna Smith competing at Kihikihi next weekend.
The 35-year-old from Te Kauwhata won the 1* aboard Cluny (owned by Gaye McClunie), and she’s now lining him up for the Prestigue Equestrian 2*, with the title in her sights.
However, Smith strained ligaments while competing at the Farmlands Horse of the Year Show, so is feeling a little like the walking wounded.
“It’s not much though,” she says. “I can’t wait for Kihikihi! It is just such an awesome event and John’s courses . . . well, what you can about them? They are incredible.”
Cluny is seven and Smith rates the former racehorse for the future.
“He is a little funny, but such a great mover, very fast galloper and has a big jump. He’s only young and once he grows into himself and gets consistent, he is going to be really hard to beat,” she says. “I am sure he will be one of my top horses in the future.”
Smith also has the very showy Mr Hokey Pokey entered in the 2*.
During the off season, Smith has been producing a bunch of youngsters and is hoping they’ll all be at pre novice this season.
“We’re back to building our team this season, but it’s all good,” she says.
