Northland Ladies Too Strong
Consistency paid off for the Mecca team who won the revamped Garrad's Horse and Hound Teams' Competition today.
Spear-headed by captain Megan Finlayson (Kerikeri) aboard Greensleeves, the team was six points clear of its nearest opposition. Mecca comprised Emma Broughton-Watts (Northland) Lochinvar II, Kirsity Bale (Northland) Wouldhe B and Antonia Cobb (Northland) Scbu.
Coming in second were the Pony Pals – Lauren Cooney (Auckland) McLaughlan, Dannie Lodder (Ararimu) Waitangi Hotmail, Amanda Wards (Auckland) South Dakota, Cara Goodman (Auckland) Wynyard Albert – on 33 points.
It was a tight battle for third with North Enders and Dream Team One sharing the honours.
An impressive 20 four-person teams took part in the event, with just the best three scores counting. Each team had to have a pre-novice and a one star competitor, with the remaining team-members able to be any grade.
The challenging cross country course saw three teams drop by the way-side, with another four withdrawing before the showjumping. Just five teams had all four team-members complete the three phases of the horse trial.
The teams' competition will now be an annual fixture on the Kihikihi schedule.
