The 2014 BNZ Kihikihi International Horse Trial is gearing up to be one of the largest on record. Entries have closed and several classes have attracted near-record numbers. Entries continued to roll in yesterday after closing date.

The 3* has 13 entries, including 2013 winner Danni Lodder (South Auckland) and Moochi (owned by Peta Easton), NRM Horse of the Year Show winner Clarke Johnstone (Cambridge) and Balmoral Sensation, Joe Waldron (Te Awamutu) and Springvale All Black, Donna Smith (Te Kauwhata) on Balmoral Tangalooma and Mathew Grayling (Taranaki) on NRM Lowenberg, among others.

The winner of the 3* will receive the inaugural Bounce Trophy, being presented by Vaughn Jefferis in honour of his superstar Olympic and world champion horse.

Both the 1* and 2* classes are very well supported with just under 50 entries each. Entries are also strong in all four CNC105 divisions, particularly the 21 years and under which will be split into two divisions because of large numbers.

“The countdown is definitely on,” says organising committee member Harriet Lamb. “It’s great to see such big strong entries.”

Also on the card is a new fun teams event which will run alongside the national and international classes. “Kihikihi always used to run a teams competition and it was suggested we reactivate the whole concept,” says Lamb.

The four person teams must include 1* and CNC105 combinations, with the other two team members allowed from any grade. On offer are vouchers from Garrard’s Horse and Hound and the impressive Kihikihi Team’s Trophy.

And the rather iconic Kihikihi flower ladies – Karen Nicholson, Barbara Cameron and Ann Smith – have been busy for weeks making sure the grounds and cross-country course look stunning once again.

“The event is really gearing up to be another cracker,” says Lamb.
